The video was made over a couple of interview sessions. Everything is pretty much first take though. Just sticking the camera in front of either the teacher or the kids whilst we had a discussion. The more videos I make the more I feel I need to improve my skills in lighting and editing but I just can’t convince myself it is the right way to spend my time.

This video was fun and easy to make. The kids had the content pretty much down pat because they’ve been doing worm farming for ages. Putting it together was a piece of cake.

This is a video on how to use Comic Life. One of the key factors in the success of implementing technology in the classroom has been that we have provided templates as scaffolds. The first time we used Comic Life we provided a half completed template. This meant the students could focus on the content and at the same time familiarise themselves with the program and have fun playing with some of the features.

The production of the video really demonstrated the challenges involved in testing new technology with the kids and recording the process at the same time. The video on this is pretty dodgy because I was really focused on the lesson itself. It also really made me think if I learn something new this year it will be a bit more about the technical side of filming. It’s such a shame that the footage doesn’t really match my expectations of the video. When filming in class you get such limited time and so few chances it’s worth slowing down and making sure your getting it right.

A lot of teachers feel they either lack the time or skills to really use technology to it’s fullest extent. This combined with the fact that user-generated video production still has technical challenges may be a factor in teachers picking up the video camera themselves.

After meeting with teachers and ICT Coordinators I have found myself thinking how would you get a good user-generated video based community started. I started thinking about the fact that for teachers, at least in NSW, there is an established method of communicating information. Most schools have ICT coordinators, these ICT co-ordinators attend face-to-face meetings to discuss implementing technology in the classroom. The ICT coordinators then inservice the teachers at their school.

Usually the ICT coordinators both at the district and school level have a greater interest in technology and greater skills in using technology. By giving ICT educators the tools to provide more resources to the teachers they work with we can really take advantage of this kind of community based knowledge. They could do things like:

Make video recordings of their inservices for reference

Create software demonstrations and post them online

Create their own video blogs on new technology or programs that are being reviewed

Record best practices with teachers in classrooms

This way they can make the most out of the little time and resources they have to spend with classroom teachers.

Still need to put a section in on registering for the site because you can’t save files without being logged in. I think this video still needs more work on the context, how you can use sounds in the classroom. Possibly with a bit of an example of creating a soundscape.
